So, what is cocoa butter oil?
Cocoa butter oil is a vegetable fat derived from the seeds of the cacao tree, Theobroma cacao. On ingredient labels, this phrasing typically refers either to standard cocoa butter or to a fractionated liquid oil separated from cocoa butter. Cacao beans are harvested, fermented, dried, roasted, and mechanically pressed under high pressure to extract the natural lipids. Manufacturers use this ingredient primarily in confectionery coatings, chocolates, baked goods, and spreads, as well as in personal care formulations such as lotions and lip balms.
Cocoa butter oil is vegan because it comes entirely from a botanical source. The processing of cacao beans into fat fractions relies exclusively on mechanical pressing, filtration, and temperature-controlled fractionation. None of these extraction or refining methods require animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids. Because no animal inputs are involved at any stage of its production, cocoa butter oil is entirely plant-based and suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
