Color E150d is the European additive code for sulfite ammonia caramel, also commonly designated as caramel IV. It is a water-soluble food coloring agent produced through the controlled thermal treatment of dietary carbohydrates in the presence of both ammonium and sulfite compounds. The starting carbohydrates are sourced entirely from plants, most commonly corn, wheat, or sugar beets.
This additive imparts a dark brown to black hue and acid stability, making it especially prevalent in carbonated soft drinks such as colas. It is also routinely found in industrial gravies, soy sauces, vinegars, dark beers, baked goods, and prepared savory sauces.
Color E150d is considered vegan because it is derived exclusively from botanical carbohydrates and mineral or synthetic chemical compounds. Animal tissues, animal by-products, and animal-derived processing aids are not used at any stage of its commercial production.
