So, what is cyclamate?
Cyclamate is an artificial, low-calorie sweetener, often designated on international ingredient lists by the food additive code E952. It is approximately thirty to fifty times sweeter than table sugar and is typically supplied as sodium cyclamate or calcium cyclamate. The compound is produced synthetically through the sulfonation of cyclohexylamine, an organic chemical derived from petroleum feedstocks, by reacting it with sulfamic acid or sulfur trioxide followed by neutralization with a mineral base. Cyclamate is commonly found in sugar-free soft drinks, tabletop sweetener tablets, low-sugar jams, canned fruits, chewing gum, and various dietary baked goods.
Cyclamate is vegan because its production relies entirely on synthetic and mineral-derived raw materials. Animal tissues, animal by-products, and animal-derived enzymes or processing aids are not utilized at any stage of its chemical synthesis or purification. Because the entire manufacturing process relies exclusively on petrochemical and mineral feedstocks, cyclamate consistently meets vegan standards across all commercial formulations.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
