So, what is d&c red no. 33?

D&C Red No. 33 is a synthetic azo dye used as a coloring agent, also known by the chemical designation acid red 33. It is produced through the chemical synthesis of aromatic hydrocarbons derived from petroleum or coal tar, typically involving diazotization and coupling reactions.

Under United States regulations, this additive is approved for use in drugs and cosmetics, including mouthwashes, toothpastes, liquid soaps, shampoos, and ingestible medications, though it is not authorized for general food use. In other regions, it may appear in personal care and pharmaceutical formulations under the international color index name CI 17200.

This ingredient is classified as vegan because it is manufactured exclusively from synthetic chemical compounds without any animal sources or animal byproducts. Because no animal-derived raw materials or processing aids are involved in its synthesis, D&C Red No. 33 does not present any animal origin concerns for vegan consumers.
