So, what is date-plum?
Date-plum is the edible fruit of Diospyros lotus, a deciduous tree species in the persimmon family native to southwest Asia and southeast Europe. The small fruits turn dark purple or brown when fully ripe and develop a rich flavor reminiscent of both dates and plums. Date-plums are harvested directly from the tree and can be consumed fresh, although they are frequently sun-dried or mechanically dehydrated for commercial distribution. Food manufacturers incorporate date-plum into dried fruit blends, snack bars, jams, baked goods, fruit leathers, and regional confections.
Date-plum is classified as vegan because it is an entirely plant-based ingredient derived from a tree fruit. The standard cultivation, harvesting, and processing methods used to produce fresh or dried date-plums do not involve animal tissues, animal derivatives, or animal-based processing aids. Because the fruit comes purely from botanical sources without animal involvement, products containing date-plum are suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
