So, what is dinkel gepufft?
"Dinkel gepufft" is a German phrase that translates to "puffed spelt" in English. It refers to a whole grain derived from the spelt plant, a cultivated subspecies of wheat. Puffed spelt is made by heating whole spelt kernels under high pressure until the internal moisture turns to steam, causing the grain to expand rapidly once the pressure is released. This ingredient is commonly listed on product labels for breakfast cereals, muesli, granolas, snack bars, and puffed grain cakes.
dinkel gepufft is vegan because it is exclusively of plant origin and does not involve animal sources. The physical puffing process relies solely on the raw grain, heat, and pressure, without the use of animal-derived processing aids or additives. On its own, the puffed grain contains no animal ingredients. When assessing finished packaged foods, consumers only need to verify that separate ingredients in the product, such as honey, dairy milk powder, or animal-based flavorings, have not been added to the recipe.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
