So, what is e1521?
E1521 is the E-number for polyethylene glycol, commonly known as PEG. It is a synthetic polymer manufactured by reacting ethylene oxide with water or ethylene glycol under controlled industrial conditions. The raw materials used to produce ethylene oxide are derived from petrochemical sources. In the food industry, E1521 functions primarily as a carrier solvent, an antifoaming agent, and a glazing agent, appearing most often on labels for food supplements, chewing gums, and encapsulated flavorings.
E1521 is vegan because it is produced entirely through chemical synthesis from petroleum-based hydrocarbons. Animal products, tissues, and byproducts are not used as raw materials, nor are animal-derived substances involved as processing aids at any stage of its manufacturing process. Because no animal sources exist for this additive, it reliably meets vegan standards.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
