So, what is e161a?
E161a is the food additive code for flavoxanthin, a naturally occurring yellow pigment belonging to the xanthophyll subgroup of carotenoids. This coloring agent is found naturally in various plants, particularly within the petals of yellow flowers such as buttercups, and it can also be produced through chemical synthesis. In the food industry, it serves as a color additive to impart a golden-yellow hue, historically appearing in products such as confectionery, processed foods, and baked goods, though its actual commercial use today is very rare.
E161a is vegan because it is derived exclusively from botanical materials or created through synthetic laboratory processes. No animal tissues, animal secretions, or animal-derived processing aids are used during the extraction from plant sources or during chemical synthesis. Because its production relies entirely on plant or non-animal synthetic origins, E161a is completely free from animal products.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
