So, what is e211?
E211, also known as sodium benzoate, is a common food preservative used to extend the shelf life of a wide range of food and beverage products. It is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and alcohol, and has a slightly sweet taste. E211 is often used in acidic foods like carbonated drinks, fruit juices, pickles, and condiments. It works by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms that can cause spoilage and food-borne illness. Although it is generally considered safe, some studies have suggested that high levels of consumption may have negative health effects, particularly in children.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
