Industrially, adipic acid is manufactured through the chemical synthesis of petrochemical precursors, typically by oxidizing cyclohexane or a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone with nitric acid. It can also be synthesized via microbial fermentation using plant-based glucose. Food manufacturers frequently use E355 in powdered drink mixes, baking powders, gel-based dessert mixes, and confectionery products to provide a tart taste and control pH levels.

E355 is vegan because it is derived exclusively from synthetic chemical processes, mineral origins, or microbial fermentation, with no animal sources involved.
