So, what is e335?
E335 is the E-number for sodium tartrates, which include monosodium tartrate and disodium tartrate, the sodium salts of tartaric acid. This food additive is produced by neutralizing tartaric acid with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. The tartaric acid used in this process is almost exclusively obtained as a natural byproduct of the winemaking industry, where it crystallizes inside wine vats during the fermentation of grape juice, though it can also be manufactured synthetically.
Manufacturers use E335 primarily as an acidity regulator, stabilizer, and sequestrant. It is commonly found in packaged baked goods, jams, jellies, confectionery, powdered dessert mixes, and soft drinks. Because the raw materials are derived entirely from plant byproducts, minerals, or synthetic chemical reactions, no animal tissues, fluids, or animal-derived processing aids are used during manufacturing. For this reason, E335 is vegan.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
