So, what is e415?
E415 is the European food additive code for xanthan gum, a widely used thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier. It is produced through the bacterial fermentation of simple sugars using the microorganism Xanthomonas campestris. The growth medium provided for the bacteria is derived from plant sources, most commonly corn, soy, wheat, or sugar beets. Following fermentation, the resulting substance is precipitated using an alcohol wash, then dried and milled into a fine, water-soluble powder.
This additive is frequently found in processed foods such as salad dressings, sauces, ice creams, condiments, gluten-free baked goods, and plant-based dairy substitutes, where it improves texture and prevents ingredients from separating. E415 is classified as vegan because it relies entirely on bacterial and plant-based origins. No animal-derived ingredients or byproducts are used in the growth medium, fermentation process, or final purification.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
