So, what is e905c?
E905c is the food additive code for microcrystalline wax, also known as petroleum wax. It is derived from crude petroleum oil during the refining process, where heavy lubricating oil distillates are de-oiled and purified. In the food industry, this hydrocarbon wax functions primarily as a glazing agent, a protective surface coating for fresh fruits, and a base ingredient or texturizer in chewing gum and confectionery.
This ingredient is vegan because it is entirely of mineral and synthetic origin. Petroleum waxes are produced strictly from fossil fuels through petrochemical extraction and refining, requiring no animal tissues, fats, or animal-derived processing aids. Because no animal sources are involved in its production, products containing e905c meet standard vegan requirements.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
