E950 is the E-number for acesulfame potassium, commonly referred to as acesulfame K, an artificial high-intensity sweetener. It is approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose and contains no calories. Manufacturers widely use E950 in reduced-calorie and sugar-free foods and beverages, including diet sodas, flavored waters, chewing gum, hard candies, baked goods, protein powders, and tabletop sweeteners, as well as in oral care products like toothpaste.

This additive is produced entirely through chemical synthesis rather than biological extraction. The industrial process involves the reaction of organic chemical derivatives, such as acetoacetamide, with sulfur trioxide, followed by neutralization using potassium hydroxide to create a white crystalline powder. Because the raw materials and reagents are strictly mineral and synthetic in origin, no animal tissues, animal by-products, or animal-derived processing aids are used during its manufacture. Therefore, E950 is vegan.
