So, what is ground sesame?
Ground sesame is a food ingredient made from crushed or pulverized seeds harvested from the Sesamum indicum plant. It is produced by cleaning, drying, and often toasting the raw seeds before mechanically milling them into a fine meal, powder, or thick paste. This ingredient commonly appears in baked goods, snack foods, spice blends, Asian sauces, confectionery items such as halva, and spreadable dips like tahini and hummus.
ground sesame is vegan because it is derived exclusively from a plant source. The manufacturing process consists solely of physical and thermal processing of the botanical seeds, requiring no animal inputs, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids at any stage. Because it contains only plant matter, ground sesame is entirely compatible with a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
