So, what is kiyomi?
Kiyomi is a Japanese citrus fruit that is a tangor, which is a hybrid between a Miyagawa Wase satsuma mandarin and a Trovita sweet orange. Developed in Japan in the mid-twentieth century and widely cultivated in Japan and South Korea, this fruit is grown on citrus trees and harvested for its flesh, juice, and aromatic peel. Food manufacturers use kiyomi fruit, purees, juice concentrates, or peel extracts to flavor a variety of products, including fruit beverages, soft drinks, hard candies, jams, jellies, marinades, and baked goods.
Kiyomi receives a vegan verdict because it is an agricultural ingredient entirely of plant origin. The fruit and its processed derivatives are derived solely from botanical sources, without the use of animal tissues, byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids. Whether it appears on an ingredient label as a whole fruit puree, freshly pressed juice, or a natural citrus flavoring, kiyomi contains no animal sources and is suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
