So, what is l-tyrosine?
L-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that functions as a structural component of proteins. It commonly appears on ingredient labels for dietary supplements, protein powders, energy drinks, pre-workout formulas, and meal replacement products.
It can be derived from plant, animal, or synthetic origins. Plant-based production relies on bacterial fermentation, where microorganisms convert plant sugars, such as glucose derived from corn or beets, into the amino acid. Animal-derived L-tyrosine is traditionally extracted by hydrolyzing protein sources rich in keratin, such as poultry feathers or hair. It can also be created synthetically using chemical precursors.
L-tyrosine is considered possibly vegan because food and supplement labels rarely state whether it came from fermentation or animal tissues. To verify that an item containing L-tyrosine is free of animal products, consumers should look for a reliable vegan certification on the packaging or contact the manufacturer to inquire about the raw materials used in production.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
