So, what is melokhia?

Melokhia, also known as jute or Jew's mallow, is a leafy vegetable commonly used in Middle Eastern, North African, and East African cuisine. It has a distinctive slimy texture when cooked, similar to okra, and a slightly bitter taste. The leaves are usually harvested when young and tender, and can be eaten fresh or dried for later use. Melokhia is often used in stews, soups, and sauces, and is traditionally served with rice or bread. It is a good source of vitamins and minerals, and is known for its health benefits, including aiding digestion and promoting heart health.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like melokhia?

We've built a database of 49359 ingredients (and growing), classified as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "maybe vegan".

We use it in our vegan ingredients scanner, which is the best way to avoid non-vegan ingredients - you take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
