So, what is mitsuba?
Mitsuba is a Japanese culinary herb, literally translating to "three leaves," commonly known in English as Japanese wild parsley or honewort. It is a perennial plant native to East Asia, cultivated primarily in Japan, China, and Korea. The plant is grown in soil or hydroponically, and its tender stems and leaves are harvested fresh, dried, or freeze-dried for food production. Mitsuba commonly appears on ingredient labels for East Asian prepared foods, including instant soups, ramen, noodle seasonings, dehydrated vegetable packets, and frozen rice dishes.
Mitsuba is vegan because it is an agricultural ingredient of pure plant origin. The ingredient consists entirely of the harvested foliage of the Cryptotaenia japonica plant and requires no animal derivatives or animal processing aids. While prepackaged meals featuring mitsuba may sometimes contain non-vegan components such as fish broth, meat extracts, or eggs, the herb itself is consistently vegan.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
