So, what is natural & artificial flavouring?

Natural and artificial flavouring is a broad term used on ingredient labels to describe a combination of substances added to foods primarily to impart or enhance taste. The natural portion is derived from plant materials, such as fruits, spices, herbs, and vegetables, or animal sources, including meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. The artificial portion consists of synthetic chemical compounds created in a laboratory, typically derived from petroleum-based chemicals, designed to mimic natural profiles. This blend is commonly listed on processed foods such as confectionery, sodas, snack foods, baked goods, and breakfast cereals.

The verdict is possibly vegan because manufacturers are legally permitted to group these diverse flavour agents under one collective label without disclosing their origins. While artificial flavourings are synthesized and do not directly involve animal products, the natural flavouring component may come from either botanical or animal materials. Unless the packaging carries an official vegan certification or the consumer contacts the manufacturer directly to confirm the origin of the natural extracts, it is impossible to determine whether the ingredient is entirely free from animal derivatives.
