So, what is onion?

Onion is the edible bulb of the flowering plant Allium cepa, a biennial vegetable grown worldwide. It is cultivated in soil and harvested when mature, after which the bulbs are cured, peeled, and prepared for commercial distribution. In food manufacturing, onions are used fresh, frozen, pickled, or processed into dehydrated flakes, granules, extracts, and powders. They appear across a vast range of packaged goods, including savory sauces, ready meals, canned soups, seasoning blends, salty snacks, and condiments.

onion is vegan because it is an agricultural crop of purely plant origin. As a vegetable harvested directly from the ground, its production involves no animal derivatives, animal tissues, or animal-based processing aids. Whether listed on an ingredient panel as fresh onion, minced onion, or dehydrated onion, the ingredient is entirely derived from plants and remains consistent with a vegan diet.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like onion?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
