So, what is pasta?
Pasta comes from the Italian word for paste or dough and refers to a food typically made by mixing ground wheat with water or other liquids. The resulting dough is rolled out, extruded, or cut into various shapes like spaghetti, macaroni, or penne, and then either dried or cooked fresh. On packaged food labels, pasta appears as an ingredient in items such as canned soups, frozen prepared meals, pasta sauces, and ready-to-eat salads.
Pasta is classified as possibly vegan because the dough can be made with entirely plant-based ingredients or with animal-derived additions. Traditional dried pasta is usually made from durum wheat semolina and water, which is vegan. However, fresh pasta and certain specialty noodles frequently incorporate whole eggs or egg yolks to adjust texture and flavor. Some prepared or filled varieties may also include dairy components such as whey, butter, or cheese. Because ingredient labels often state pasta without specifying the sub-ingredients used to make the dough, only a certified vegan label or direct confirmation from the manufacturer can verify whether it contains animal products.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
