So, what is potassium iodide?

Potassium iodide is an inorganic chemical compound composed of potassium and iodine ions. Industrially, it is manufactured by reacting potassium hydroxide with elemental iodine, a mineral typically extracted from underground brine deposits, caliche ore, or seaweed ash. Manufacturers commonly add it to table salt to create iodized salt, and it also frequently appears as an iodine fortifier in infant formulas, meal replacement shakes, packaged breads, and dietary supplements.

Potassium iodide is vegan because its production relies entirely on mineral and synthetic origins without any animal-derived inputs. Neither the elemental raw materials nor the chemical processes used to synthesize the salt involve animal tissues, slaughter byproducts, or animal-based processing aids. Because it is completely free from animal sources across all standard manufacturing methods, potassium iodide is suitable for vegans.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like potassium iodide?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
