So, what is potassium sulfite?
Potassium sulfite is a food ingredient that is commonly used as a preservative in a variety of processed foods, such as wine, beer, and dried fruits. It is a white crystalline powder that has a slightly sulfuric odor and is highly soluble in water. Potassium sulfite is often added to foods to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, which can cause spoilage and food-borne illness. However, some people may be sensitive to sulfites and experience allergic reactions, such as asthma, hives, or anaphylaxis. As with any food ingredient, it is important to use potassium sulfite in moderation and according to the manufacturer's instructions.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
