So, what is potassium çitrate?
Potassium çitrate is a typographical variation of potassium citrate, the potassium salt of citric acid, which is also identified by the additive code E332. On food packaging, this spelling typically represents an optical character recognition error or misprint for standard potassium citrate. It commonly functions as an acidity regulator, stabilizer, and buffering agent in items such as soft drinks, electrolyte beverages, powdered drink mixes, candies, and nutritional supplements.
Manufacturers produce potassium citrate by neutralizing citric acid with potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate. The potassium components are sourced from natural mineral deposits. The citric acid is produced commercially through the microbial fermentation of plant-based sugars, such as molasses or corn starch, utilizing the mold Aspergillus niger.
The verdict is vegan because the raw materials and processing methods rely entirely on microbial, plant, and mineral sources. Animal-derived ingredients and processing aids are not used in its synthesis, making potassium citrate suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
