So, what is propyl gallate?
Propyl gallate is a synthetic food additive that is commonly used as an antioxidant to prevent oils and fats from going rancid. It is a white crystalline powder with a slightly bitter taste and is often added to products such as baked goods, sausage, and potato chips. Propyl gallate works by inhibiting the oxidation process, which can extend the shelf life of food products. While the FDA has deemed it safe for consumption, some studies have shown potential health risks with prolonged exposure. Therefore, it is recommended to consume propyl gallate in moderation.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
