So, what is pulse?
A pulse is the edible, dry harvested seed of a leguminous plant, which includes dry beans, lentils, chickpeas, and split peas. Farmers grow and harvest these crops after the seed pods mature and dry on the vine. The harvested seeds undergo mechanical cleaning, sorting, and drying, and manufacturers may also dehull, split, or grind them into flours and protein concentrates. Food packaging frequently lists pulses in canned soups, plant-based meat alternatives, legume pastas, extruded snack foods, and baked goods.
pulse is vegan because it is an entirely plant-derived ingredient. Pulses originate purely from botanical sources and require no animal inputs or animal-derived processing aids during harvesting or industrial milling. Because all varieties of pulses come strictly from agricultural crops, they contain no animal ingredients and are suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
