So, what is schellack?
Schellack, also known as shellac, is a natural resin secreted by the female lac bug native to India and Thailand. The resin is harvested by scraping it off the branches of trees where the bugs live. Schellack is commonly used in food production as a glaze or coating agent for candy, chocolate, and pharmaceutical pills. It provides a glossy finish and acts as a barrier to moisture, making it an ideal preservative. Schellack is considered safe for consumption and is approved by regulatory agencies such as the FDA and EFSA.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
