So, what is shellac wax?
Shellac wax is a natural resinous secretion obtained from the secretions of the lac beetle. It is commonly used as a food glaze, coating or surface finish, and is known for its glossy appearance and water-resistant properties. Shellac wax is often used in confectionery, bakery, and other food processing industries to give a shiny, protective layer to food products. Despite its name, shellac wax is not derived from shellfish, but is instead a byproduct of insects. It is a safe and natural food ingredient that is approved for use in many countries.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
