So, what is sodium glutamate?
Sodium glutamate, also known as monosodium glutamate (MSG), is a commonly used flavor enhancer in the food industry. It is a white crystalline powder that is derived from glutamic acid, an amino acid found naturally in many foods, including meat, vegetables, and dairy products. When added to food, sodium glutamate amplifies the savory taste, known as umami, and enhances the overall flavor. Despite some controversy surrounding its safety, sodium glutamate is considered a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) food ingredient by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
