So, what is tbhq?

TBHQ, or tertiary butylhydroquinone, is a synthetic antioxidant used as a food preservative to prevent the oxidation of fats and oils. It is produced through chemical synthesis from petroleum-based precursors, typically by reacting hydroquinone with tert-butanol or isobutylene in an industrial process.

This additive is frequently listed on labels for processed items with a high fat content that require an extended shelf life. Common examples include commercial vegetable oils, frying fats, potato chips, crackers, instant noodles, frozen meals, microwave popcorn, and packaged baked goods.

TBHQ is vegan because it is derived completely from synthetic, petrochemical origin. No animal tissues, byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids are used in its commercial manufacture. Because animals are entirely absent from its production supply chain, TBHQ meets standard vegan dietary criteria.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like tbhq?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
