So, what is turmeric?
Turmeric is a spice and natural coloring agent derived from the rhizomes of the Curcuma longa plant, which belongs to the ginger family. To produce commercial turmeric powder, the underground stems are harvested, boiled or steamed, dried in ovens or under the sun, and then ground into a fine, bright yellow-orange powder. It can also be sold fresh or processed into liquid oleoresins and concentrated extracts.
This ingredient is widely used across the food industry, appearing in curry powders, prepared mustards, broths, packaged snack foods, pickles, and spice blends. Manufacturers also employ turmeric or its primary pigment, curcumin, to impart a yellow color to plant-based dairy substitutes, baked goods, and confectioneries.
turmeric is vegan because it is entirely of plant origin. The farming, drying, and milling processes rely exclusively on botanical material and standard mechanical methods, without the use of animal sources or animal-derived processing aids.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
