So, what is cannabis?

Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants in the Cannabaceae family, used as a botanical ingredient in food and beverage items. It is grown agriculturally, and the ingredient listed on labels comes from the dried flowers, leaves, or concentrated extracts of the plant species Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica. Processors harvest the plant matter and dry it, or extract its active compounds using methods such as solvent washing, heat pressing, or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. Cannabis appears on ingredient labels for infused food items such as baked goods, candies, chocolates, cooking oils, and packaged beverages.

Cannabis is classified as vegan because it is derived entirely from plants. Neither the cultivation of the botanical crop nor the standard extraction methods require animal organs, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids. While multi-ingredient consumer products containing cannabis may occasionally include non-vegan components like gelatin, dairy butter, or honey, the cannabis ingredient itself is strictly botanical.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like cannabis?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
