Benzophenone-3, commonly known as oxybenzone, is a synthetic organic chemical compound used primarily as a photostabilizer and ultraviolet light absorber. It is produced industrially through chemical synthesis using petrochemical starting materials, typically by reacting benzoyl chloride with 3-methoxyphenol or through related synthetic chemical pathways.
While most widely utilized in sunscreens, lotions, and other personal care formulations, benzophenone-3 also appears on ingredient declarations for clear plastic food packaging, protective films, and occasionally directly in foods and beverages. In food applications, it functions as an additive to protect products from degradation caused by exposure to ultraviolet light, helping prevent discoloration, rancidity, and the loss of sensitive flavor compounds.
