Caramel E150d, commonly known as sulfite ammonia caramel or Class IV caramel, is a water-soluble food coloring. It is produced through the controlled heat treatment of food-grade carbohydrates in the presence of both sulfite and ammonium compounds. The carbohydrate source is typically derived from plant starches such as corn, wheat, or sugar beets. This additive is widely used to impart a dark brown to black color in soft drinks, particularly colas, as well as in beers, gravies, soy sauces, confectionery, and baked goods.
Caramel E150d is classified as vegan because its raw materials and processing agents are entirely of plant, mineral, or synthetic origin. The base carbohydrates are extracted from agricultural crops, while the ammonium and sulfite reactants are inorganic chemical compounds. At no stage of the manufacturing process are animal tissues, dairy, or animal-derived processing aids used.
