So, what is carmine?
Carmine is a vivid red pigment derived from the crushed shells of cochineal insects. It has been used as a natural food coloring for centuries, producing shades that range from bright pink to deep crimson. Carmine is commonly found in candy, yogurt, ice cream, and other processed foods. While it is generally considered safe for consumption, some people may be allergic to it. Vegans and vegetarians avoid carmine due to its animal origin, and some ethical concerns have been raised over the use of insects for food production.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
