So, what is carminic?
Carminic acid is a natural red pigment extracted from the bodies of female scale insects, particularly the cochineal insect. It is commonly used as a food coloring agent to impart a bright red or pink hue to various food products, including dairy products, beverages, baked goods, and confectionery. Carminic acid is known for its excellent stability and resistance to heat, making it a popular choice for food manufacturers. Despite its widespread use, carminic acid is a controversial ingredient due to concerns regarding insect allergens and vegan dietary preferences.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
