So, what is chipotle garlic sauce?
Chipotle garlic sauce is a blended condiment made from garlic and smoked jalapeño peppers, with chipotle being a Spanish term meaning smoked chili. It is typically produced by combining pureed chipotle chiles with garlic, oil, vinegar, water, and spices. Food manufacturers list it on the packaging of prepared wraps, frozen burritos, grain bowls, marinades, and bottled condiments.
This ingredient is classified as possibly vegan because its formulation varies depending on the producer. While the garlic and chiles are plant-derived, the sauce base may consist of either plant or animal products. Plant-based versions generally rely on vegetable oil, vinegar, or tomato paste. However, other preparations achieve a creamy consistency by incorporating dairy products like sour cream, buttermilk, or whey, or by using traditional mayonnaise prepared with egg yolks. Honey is also sometimes included as a sweetener. Because labels often list chipotle garlic sauce as a single composite ingredient without disclosing its sub-ingredients, a vegan certification on the package or direct confirmation from the manufacturer is required to verify that it is free from animal products.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
