So, what is coconut water from?
"Coconut water from" is an incomplete label phrase that typically appears on food packaging as "coconut water from concentrate," referring to the clear fluid harvested from green coconuts that has been reduced and reconstituted. To produce this ingredient, liquid is extracted from young coconuts, filtered, and heated under vacuum to evaporate the water content into a dense concentrate for efficient transport. Water is subsequently added back to the concentrate prior to packaging. This ingredient is commonly found in packaged beverages, fruit juice blends, smoothies, flavored waters, and frozen desserts.
this ingredient is vegan because it is derived entirely from a plant source. Coconut water is harvested directly from the fruit of the coconut palm, and the concentration and reconstitution steps involve only mechanical filtration, heat, and water. These standard processing methods do not utilize animal-derived fining agents, processing aids, or animal additives. Because the source material is purely botanical and no animal components are introduced during processing, ingredients labeled as coconut water from concentrate are suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
