So, what is coenzyme q10?
Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance found naturally in living cells. In commercial production, it is typically manufactured via microbial fermentation utilizing non-animal yeasts or bacteria, such as Rhodobacter sphaeroides. It can also be produced through chemical synthesis using plant-derived starting materials, notably solanesol extracted from tobacco leaves. Coenzyme Q10 commonly appears on ingredient lists for dietary supplements, functional foods, enriched beverages, and topical skincare formulations.
coenzyme Q10 is vegan because commercial manufacturing relies entirely on microbial fermentation or synthetic chemical routes. Animal tissues, while naturally containing the compound, are not used as an industrial source because extraction from animal organs is inefficient and cost-prohibitive compared to fermentation methods. Consequently, the ingredient is produced without animal inputs or animal-derived processing aids, making it suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
