E1142 is not an officially assigned food additive code and most likely appears on ingredient labels as an optical character recognition error or typographical misprint for E1442, commonly known as hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate. Hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate is a modified food starch that functions as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier. It is manufactured by chemically treating plant starch, derived from corn, waxy maize, tapioca, wheat, or potato, with synthetic etherifying agents and mineral phosphates to improve its tolerance to heat, acid, and freezing.
Food manufacturers use this additive in a wide range of processed items, including canned soups, prepared gravies, salad dressings, puddings, bakery fillings, and frozen ready meals.
The verdict is vegan because the intended substance is made without animal sources. Its production relies exclusively on botanical starches and synthetic or mineral chemical compounds, with no animal byproducts used at any stage of manufacturing.
