So, what is e1133?

The code e1133 is not an official food additive designation and most likely appears on ingredient lists as a typographical error or scanning misread of E133, the code for the synthetic colorant Brilliant Blue FCF. Brilliant Blue FCF is an artificial triarylmethane dye produced through organic chemical synthesis using aromatic hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. Manufacturers add it to food and beverage products to impart a vivid blue shade, and it is frequently found in items such as confectionery, energy drinks, baked goods, ice pops, dessert mixes, and processed snacks.

This ingredient is considered vegan because its production relies entirely on synthetic petrochemical compounds, with no animal tissue, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids utilized during manufacturing. Because the substance originates exclusively from non-animal synthetic chemicals, any product listing this colorant meets vegan standards.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like e1133?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
