So, what is e126?
E126 is the E-number for Ponceau 6R, a synthetic red azo dye used as a coloring agent. It is produced through multi-step chemical synthesis, typically by coupling diazotized naphthionic acid with R-salt, both of which are derived from petroleum hydrocarbons or coal tar. When utilized in food manufacturing, it imparts a deep red shade to items such as confectionery, soft drinks, fruit preserves, sauces, and dessert mixes. While its use in food has been restricted or discontinued in many countries, the additive still appears on product formulations in regions where it remains authorized, as well as in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
E126 is considered vegan because it is entirely synthetic and derived from mineral and petrochemical sources. The synthesis process does not incorporate any animal ingredients, nor does it require processing aids or carriers derived from animals. Because no animal-derived raw materials are involved at any point in its production, E126 meets the criteria for a vegan ingredient.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
