E450 is the European food additive code for diphosphates, a group of mineral salts that includes disodium diphosphate, tetrasodium diphosphate, and calcium diphosphates. These substances function as leavening agents, emulsifiers, acidity regulators, and moisture-binding stabilizers. They are commonly listed on the ingredient labels of commercial baked goods, baking powder, instant potato products, processed meat substitutes, and canned foods.

Diphosphates are manufactured by reacting purified phosphoric acid with alkaline mineral bases, such as sodium carbonate or potassium hydroxide, followed by high-temperature dehydration. The primary raw material, phosphoric acid, is derived from mined phosphate rock. Because the production relies exclusively on mineral deposits and synthetic processing, animal tissues or animal-derived substances are never used at any stage of manufacturing. For this reason, E450 is considered entirely vegan.
