So, what is e903?
E903 is the European food additive code for carnauba wax, a natural glazing agent. It is harvested from the leaves of the carnauba palm tree, Copernicia prunifera, which is native to northeastern Brazil. Workers harvest the palm fronds, dry them, and beat them mechanically to dislodge the waxy coating. The harvested flakes are subsequently melted, filtered, and refined into a usable food-grade wax. Food manufacturers typically use E903 to provide a glossy finish and prevent moisture loss in chewing gum, hard-shelled candies, chocolate coatings, pastries, and fresh produce.
E903 is vegan because its origin is entirely botanical. Unlike other common glazing agents such as beeswax or shellac, which are derived from insects, carnauba wax contains no animal components and does not require animal-derived processing aids during its manufacture. Therefore, products containing E903 comply with vegan dietary standards.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
