So, what is fd&c red n 40?
FD&C Red No. 40, commonly known as Allura Red AC or E129, is a synthetic azo dye used as a red food coloring. The label text "fd&c red n 40" represents FD&C Red No. 40, where the letter "n" serves as an abbreviation or typographical variant for "number." This coloring is manufactured through chemical synthesis using aromatic hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It is widely added to processed foods and drinks, such as sodas, fruit-flavored snacks, breakfast cereals, baked goods, candies, and condiments.
This ingredient is vegan because it is made entirely from synthetic, petroleum-based starting materials and does not contain or utilize any animal derivatives. It is distinct from other red colorants like carmine or cochineal, which are extracted from crushed insects. Since no animal components or animal-derived processing aids are used during the synthesis of FD&C Red No. 40, it satisfies standard vegan dietary criteria.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
