So, what is ginger?
Ginger is the underground rhizome of Zingiber officinale, a flowering perennial plant native to Southeast Asia. It is harvested from the soil, cleaned, and used fresh, dried, ground into a fine spice powder, or processed into extracts and essential oils. Food manufacturers use ginger across a wide range of categories, including baked goods, curry pastes, marinades, candies, teas, ginger beers, and savory packaged meals, where it serves as a primary flavoring agent or aromatic spice.
This ingredient is classified as vegan because it is derived entirely from a botanical source. The agricultural cultivation, harvesting, and standard processing of ginger roots do not require animal-derived materials, animal tissues, or animal processing aids. Whether an ingredient label lists fresh ginger, ginger root, ground ginger, ginger puree, or ginger extract, the substance remains completely plant-based.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
