So, what is jujube fruit?

Jujube fruit, also known as red date or Chinese date, is the edible fruit of the Ziziphus jujuba tree, a plant native to Southern and Eastern Asia. The fruit is typically harvested when ripe and can be consumed fresh or dried until it resembles a wrinkled date. It frequently appears on ingredient lists for herbal teas, broths, traditional confectionery, baked goods, jams, syrups, and packaged snack foods.

Processing generally involves washing, drying through sun exposure or mechanical dehydration, and occasionally pureeing or boiling the fruit into liquid extracts. Because jujube fruit is entirely of plant origin, it contains no animal tissues or byproducts. Standard commercial cultivation and post-harvest handling methods do not use animal-based ingredients, glazes, or animal-derived processing aids. Therefore, jujube fruit is inherently vegan in both fresh and dried forms.

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
