So, what is karmijn?
Karmijn, also known as carmine or cochineal extract, is a natural food coloring derived from crushing the dried bodies of female cochineal insects. Due to its bright crimson color, karmijn is commonly used in processed foods such as candies, fruit juices, and yogurts. Despite being a popular ingredient, some people may have an allergic reaction to karmijn, making it important to read food labels carefully. Additionally, some individuals may prefer to avoid karmijn altogether due to ethical concerns surrounding the harvesting of the insects.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
