So, what is oregon yampah?
Oregon yampah is a perennial flowering plant in the carrot family, known botanically as Perideridia oregana. Native to western North America, it produces edible tuberous roots and aromatic seeds. When harvested for food use, the roots are typically cleaned and consumed fresh, roasted, or dried and milled into flour, while the seeds are collected to use as a spice similar to caraway. It primarily appears on ingredient lists for regional specialty foods, wild-harvested flour blends, botanical seasonings, and herbal tea mixtures.
Oregon yampah is vegan because it is an entirely plant-derived ingredient. The harvesting and standard processing of the tubers and seeds rely purely on physical handling, such as washing, drying, and grinding, without the use of animal products or animal-derived processing aids. Because it comes exclusively from a botanical source, it is suitable for strict vegan diets.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
